Experts to debate nuclear deterrence in South Asia Wednesday

Two of the nation's preeminent scholars on international security and nuclear weapons will meet Wednesday (Nov. 18) for a debate on the long-term security implications of nuclear weapons in South Asia. It will be moderated by David Fidler, the James Louis Calamaras Professor of Law in the Indiana University Maurer School of Law and director of the IU Center on American and Global Security.   Full Story »

Venture Capital team wins berth in national tournament

Three Indiana University Maurer School of Law students were part of the winning IU Internal Venture Capital Investment Competition last month, earning a coveted spot in the national competition this spring. The Elmore Entrepreneurship Law Clinic at the IU Maurer School of Law sponsored the 2nd Annual IU Internal Venture Capital Competition on Oct. 31, 2009, at the Law School. In its second year, the competition attracted 40 students from the Law School and the IU Kelley School of Business MBA program, combining into eight teams of five participants.   Full Story »

Scholars, practitioners to consider state-building in Afghanistan, Iraq

Top scholars on Afghanistan and Iraq will meet on the Indiana University Bloomington campus Friday and Saturday (Nov. 13-14) for one of the first collaborative conferences on state-building in both nations. "State-Building in the Contemporary Islamic World: U.S. Intervention in Iraq and Afghanistan" is being presented by the Indiana Democracy Consortium. Law Community Mourns Sir David Williams

Sir David Williams, the first Indiana University Maurer School of Law George P. Smith Distinguished Visiting Professor-Chair and frequent contributor to the Indiana Journal of Global Legal Studies, died last month in Cambridge, England. He was 78.

Former NRA president will speak Tuesday at IU Maurer School of Law

Sandra "Sandy" Froman, a former two-term president of the National Rifle Association, will visit the Indiana University Maurer School of Law on Tuesday (Nov. 3) to discuss the recent decision by the U.S. Supreme Court to review McDonald v. Denial of marriage license to interracial couple unconstitutional, law professor says

The denial of a marriage license to an interracial couple by a Louisiana justice of the peace was unconstitutional, according to an Indiana University Maurer School of Law professor. According to news reports, the justice of the peace denied the couple's marriage license application earlier this month due to concerns for their future children.   Full Story »

Law professor available to comment on Supreme Court cases

The U.S. Supreme Court has begun its 2009-10 term and is hearing arguments in two cases this week. Indiana University Maurer School of Law Professor Dan Conkle is available to comment on both. Arguments in United States v. Stevens will be heard today (Oct. 6). The case tests the government's ability to ban depictions of animal cruelty, including dogfighting, as a way to prohibit animal torture. Salazar v. Buono, to be heard on Wednesday (Oct. 7), involves the erection of a cross on federal land in the Mojave National Preserve in California.   Full Story »

Law professor testifies before Senate committee on Burma, urges constitutional change

Facing the U.S. Senate Committee on Foreign Relations, Indiana University Maurer School of Law Professor David C. Law School to be named in honor of alumnus and benefactor Michael S. Maurer

Hundreds of university leaders, students, and alumni are expected to be on hand Friday (Sept. 25) for the official naming of the Indiana University Michael Maurer School of Law. The ceremony will coincide with the Law School's second annual Alumni Summit and celebrate a $35 million gift from Michael and Janie Maurer the Law School received last December.   Full Story »

Outspoken Cuban-American writer Achy Obejas to address IU community for Hispanic Heritage Month

Cuban American journalist Achy Obejas will speak at IU Bloomington Sept. 30 during National Hispanic Heritage Month. Her lecture, titled "Navigating Multiple Identities," will take place from 7-8:30 p.m. at the Helene G. Simon Hillel Center (730 E. Waldron leading new Environmental Law Program

Building on the foundation of a successful academic program and Conservation Law Center, the Indiana University Maurer School of Law has appointed Carolyn Waldron as director of its Environmental Law Program.
